Expanded Yoga......explained

Beginner's Courses are progressive and each class is composed of Yigic Exercises, Asanas and Pranayam, whilst Yoga Nidras are alternated each week with the Meditation technique for that term. Each term focuses on a different meditation technique. We start with simple movements and easy practices which focus on awareness and progress naturally, step by step each week to more challenging practices. They give an introduction to holistic, metaphysical and yogic concepts. They develop and balance all aspects of your being to reduce stress, tone and energize the body, help create physical health (discover how good your body can feel !), bring mental and emotional harmony, and a deeper self understanding. Previously covered practices are regularly revised along with the addition of new practices to continually expand the knowledge and experience. Remember your teacher is there to help you and is pleased to answer your questions. 1½ hour sessions suitable for all.

Intermediate Courses continue to progress into more advanced yogic exercises and asanas to give an enjoyable physical challenge. Pranayama is expanded, with an introduction to the bandhas (energy locks) and a focus on the chakras and their functions, plus meditation and metaphysical exercises to further develop the balance of body, emotions, mind, and spirit. The gradually more advanced practices raise the energy, and develop the awareness, not only during class but in the experience and management of our daily lives. The intermediate 2 courses have a stronger metaphysical emphasis and are suitable for the enthusiastic longer term student who may have some physical limitations. Suitable for the student who wishes to delve deeper into the yogic experience. 2 or 2½ hour sessions.

Senior Courses are for the committed Yoga Student. They cover more self investigation at the metaphysical level along with the developing pranayama, mudras, bandhas and meditation. They also focus on more challenging asanas, for the more physically able. They require a geniune committment to Yoga home practice with a desire to activate and maintain optimum health in body, mind, and spirit, to lift the vibration and integrate the higher consciousness into the physical reality. The reading of certain texts is required and it is suggested that participants enrol in private assessment and development session with Jayananda each year . 2½ hour sessions.

General Classes present the full range of practices included in the Expanded Yoga courses at progressive levels but do not include any metaphysical discussion. Suitable for those who value the Yogic techniques but have no desire to investigate the philosophy and processes involved. 1 to 1½ hour sessions.

Definitions

Yogic Exercises : Movements performed with inner focus. They stimulate the circulation, lubricate the joints, eliminate toxins and develop the awareness. Also used as warm-ups prior to Asanas.

Asanas : Static postures to develop flexibility and strength, tone the internal organs, balance the body functions and develop the ability to maintain body stillness. They activate the subtle awareness and awaken astrong but relaxed degree of mental focus, and gradually stimulate and liberate the subtle energy.

Pranayama : Starting with simple breathing practices that clear the lungs, oxygenate the body, calm the mind and emotions, Pranayama becomes a powerful practice to balance the two brain hemispheres, and works directly to clear, balance, activate direct and intensify energy.

Yoga Nidra : Deep relaxation equivalent up to 4 times as much sleep. Releases daily stresses. Allows natural healing to occur. Recharges energy. Greatly needed in our modern lifestyles. Usually given for between 15 and 30 minutes this practice3 alternates in Beginner Courses with Meditations

Meditation : Each term at the Beginner level teaches a different traditional meditation technique to widen the students meditation skills and to allow the student to find the technique that suits their personality. These are guided practices in which the student is assisted in finding ways to make friends with the mind and step outside of the mind chatter. Meditation can then work with the deeper layers of the mind creating focus, clarity and calmness of mind. Regualr practice releases mental and emotional blockages and leads towards joy, bliss and enlightenment.

Metaphysics : Explores an alternate model of reality as seen in yogic physiology and philosophy, and contemporary spiritual thought, seeing all life as energy and consciousness. Gives understanding and tools that empower and expand us.

How to prepare for your yoga class

What you will need each week:

1. A blanket to cover you for relaxation or meditation

2. Initially an extra blanket (firm) to sit and do the practices on, and to create your own practice space. You will shortly need to replace this with a proper Yoga Mat which will be more suitable as it gives you more support and is non-slip.

3. Drinking water, especially during the warmer months

4. Clothing that allows freedom of movement and is removable in hotter weather or when you warm up from the more dynamic practices

5. Have only light food in your stomach and preferably do not eat for two hours before a class

6. A Meditation Stool if you are unable to sit comfortably with a straight back

Your First Class

Your teacher will have worked to create a quiet and welcoming atmosphere and will also have checked your enrollment forms to be aware of any physical difficulties you may have. If you are uncertain about anything given during the class please ask your teacher. She will be happy to help you.

1. After enrolling, remove your shoes and leave them with your personal belongings where indicated.

2. Upon entering the yoga room, find a place to spread your blanket or mat longwise towards your teachers position. Lie down on your back with your head closest to the teacher, close your eyes and allow yourself to gently begin to relax in the quiet. Your teacher will guide you from there at starting time.
